I wonder how many people remember watching the show "Romper Room" as a kid.The thing that really stands out in my memory is at the end of the show, when the host would hold up the "magic mirror" and talk about the people she could see at home having a good time watching etc.Whenever she said "David" I just thought that was the best thing (and felt sorry for my friends like Anastasia who rarely if ever heard their name).Every show though I would sit and listen carefully to see if the woman on t.v. could actually see me that day!

I was at a retreat for new pastors this past week.At the end of the four days, we prayed around a circle to send everyone on their respective ways.Brian Craig, who led the retreat, finished by going around the circle, naming everyone in his own prayer to God.

It seemed like a really cool thing to do and moved me pretty deeply. It made me think of Romper Room and how great I thought it was that the lady knew my name.Through the Bible people are being called by name – from Moses to Samuel to Mary at the empty tomb.Knowing someone's name is fundamental to knowing them.In Isaiah 43:1 God says "I have called you by name" – in other words "I know you!"Naming people when we pray seems like a recognition of that somehow.I'm going to try and do more of it.

Peace,
David
